Digitalization leads to better utilization of parking spaces, and citizens can find available spots in real time via the CityPilot app.

About

The city of Troisdorf, in collaboration with Smart City System, has developed and implemented innovative parking solutions. The goal of the project was to digitalize parking spaces in order to provide better services to citizens, optimize traffic flow, and enable data-driven decision-making within the city administration. The implementation took place as part of Troisdorf’s Smart City strategy, which was launched in 2022.
Challenge
Troisdorf faced several challenges in parking management. On the one hand, there was a significant need for more efficient parking solutions for commuters and residents. At the same time, the city aimed to ease the workload of the public order office and reduce unnecessary patrol drives. Another issue was the underuse of certain parking areas, as many citizens were unaware of their existence. Additionally, there was a need to conduct data-driven analyses to strategically guide future measures in mobility and urban planning.
Solution

By using parking sensors and the CityPilot app, parking spaces were digitalized and their occupancy displayed in real time. This not only enables citizens to find parking more efficiently, but also allows the city administration to collect valuable data on parking space usage. These data are used for forecasting, policymaking, and reducing traffic caused by the search for parking. Smart City System was selected as a partner after a market analysis, as their solution could be implemented quickly, cost-effectively, and with minimal effort.

Transformation
Since the introduction of the Smart Parking solution, parking utilization in Troisdorf has improved significantly. Parking areas that were previously underused are now almost fully occupied, as residents and commuters can see available spaces directly via the CityPilot app. As a result, parking search traffic has been reduced, saving time and lowering environmental impact.
The work of the public order office has also become more efficient through digitalization. The authority can now access real-time data and conduct more targeted inspections, thus avoiding unnecessary patrols. The city administration also uses the collected data for in-depth analysis to derive future measures for improving mobility infrastructure. This enables data-driven decision-making and makes it easier to support political arguments with concrete figures.
The digital transformation of parking is just the beginning. Troisdorf plans to further expand the system to better connect not only parking spaces but also other mobility services, such as public transport and sharing services. By integrating additional information, such as train departure times or the availability of rental bikes, the CityPilot app is set to become a comprehensive mobility platform for residents and commuters.
