// Case Study

City of Troisdorf
Smart parking with CityPilot app & parking sensors.

Troisdorf is digitizing its parking areas: parking sensors and the CityPilot app show available spaces in real time, reduce parking search traffic and create a data-driven basis for mobility planning.

  • Municipality: City of Troisdorf
  • Use case: Smart parking & CityPilot app
  • Project start: 2022 · Live operation since 2025
Project brief
  • Sector: Municipality / Smart City
  • Use case: Digital parking management & user information
  • Target groups: Residents, commuters & public order office
  • Technology: IoT parking sensors & CityPilot app

// Overview

Initial situation & objectives.

Troisdorf wanted to make its parking areas more visible digitally, simplify the search for parking for residents and at the same time create a solid data basis for mobility decisions.

As part of the smart city strategy, selected parking spaces were equipped with sensor technology and linked to the CityPilot app. This creates a real-time picture of occupancy that reaches both the administration and the users.

Project challenges.

  1. Unclear occupancy of parking areas throughout the day
  2. Searching for parking spaces without digital support and guidance
  3. High workload for the public order office due to unnecessary patrols
  4. Hardly used parking areas that many residents were unaware of
  5. Lack of data basis for strategic mobility decisions

// Solution & implementation

Digital parking solution with IoT sensors & CityPilot app.

The core of the project is the combination of parking sensors, secure data transmission and an app that makes available spaces visible.

  1. Selected parking spaces equipped with parking sensors
  2. Real-time transmission of occupancy data to the platform
  3. Integration of the data into the CityPilot app for residents & commuters
  4. Dashboard & analytics for the administration and public order office

Implementation & rollout.

The solution was introduced step by step: from area analysis and sensor installation through to integration with the CityPilot app and training of stakeholders.

  1. As-is analysis of parking areas and definition of target zones
  2. Planning of sensor positions and technical implementation on site
  3. Connection to the Smart City System platform & CityPilot app
  4. Pilot phase, fine-tuning and transition to regular operation

// Results & transformation

Better utilization, less search traffic, more data for decisions.

With the digital parking solution, Troisdorf improves both the service for residents and the efficiency within the administration – from space utilization through to strategic planning.

Efficient use of spaces

Previously underused parking areas are better utilized because available spaces are visible in the app and can be actively targeted.

Less parking search traffic

Residents and commuters find available spaces more quickly, which reduces circling traffic and relieves surrounding streets.

Data for smart city strategy

The city administration uses occupancy data for analyses, forecasts and policy decisions related to mobility and parking.

// Outlook

Next steps towards connected mobility.

The digital parking solution is one building block of Troisdorf’s smart city strategy – in the future, additional mobility services are to be integrated.

  1. Expansion to additional parking areas and zones
  2. Linking with public transport information and sharing services
  3. Building an integrated mobility platform for residents
  4. Ongoing optimization based on the collected data

Voice from the administration.

The city sees the solution as a pragmatic entry point into digital mobility with tangible added value for residents.

“Experiment, test, expand – with relatively little effort, a visible smart city project emerges that makes parking tangibly more digital and can serve as a blueprint for further applications.”
