About

The city of Zwickau, with scientific support from the West Saxon University of Applied Sciences Zwickau, aims to create intelligent and data-driven charging infrastructure for commuter traffic. Combined parking and charging data will show where parking demand is high and how the EV charging stations are actually being used, allowing for the implementation of measures if necessary.

Challenge

Since 2020, the city of Zwickau has had EV charging stations. However, it was unclear at which locations and how the parking spaces at these charging stations were being utilized. The charging data alone was not sufficient to get a comprehensive overview.

Solution

The Smart City System solution helps provide an overview of the parking situation and the blocking of charging points in the city of Zwickau. Extensive excavation work or further underground interventions were not desired. By simply attaching the sensors, these requirements were fully met. Additionally, in residential areas, the need for organizing the power supply was eliminated, as the deployed NB-IoT sensors operate independently.

The biggest issue has always been the blocking of EV charging stations. However, it quickly became clear that it wouldn’t be possible to capture this solely with charging data. We needed another system to overlay data from both systems and analyze the problem more accurately. That’s how we came to use ground sensors.

Transformation

The live data collected by the sensors is reviewed daily in the dashboard, directly helping to identify irregularities in parking behavior.

In addition, historical evaluations and statistics play a crucial role, as they allow measures to be monitored and analyzed over time.

The parking behavior at individual locations can still be compared with each other.
