Euro Rastpark – The rest park of the future
Real-time monitoring of truck parking spaces.
At a Euro Rastpark site, 34 truck parking spaces are digitized with ground sensors and remaining-space display. Truck drivers can see available spaces at an early stage, operators control occupancy in real time and reduce the search for parking to a minimum.
- Operator: Euro Rastpark GmbH & Co. KG
- Focus: Truck rest area & long-haul logistics
- Project start: 2023
- Industry: Private truck rest areas / truck stops
- Use case: Real-time monitoring & management of truck rest area parking spaces
- Type of area: Truck parking spaces at a truck stop / rest area
- Technology: NB-IoT parking sensors & LED remaining-space display
- Scale: 34 digitized truck parking spaces
// Overview
Initial situation & objectives.
With currently 18 locations, Euro Rastpark GmbH & Co. KG, part of the DV Immobilien Group, is the largest private provider in Germany and thus the market leader in the field of truck rest areas.
Before arrival, truck drivers could not see whether there were still available spaces at the rest park. Many drivers arrived to find the parking area already full – causing frustration, additional search traffic and, in the worst case, loss of potential customers. The goal was to provide information on available truck parking spaces as early and reliably as possible and to make this visible both on site and digitally.
Project challenges.
- No way for truck drivers to check availability in advance.
- Frequent arrival at a fully occupied rest park – leading to frustration and potential loss of revenue.
- Need for a reliable, automated real-time overview for operators and drivers.
- The solution had to work with manageable hardware and integrate well into operations.
// Solution & implementation
Real-time occupancy with parking space sensors.
Every truck parking space at the rest park is equipped with a ground sensor that records occupancy in real time and automatically transmits it to a central control system.
- Installation of ground sensors on each of the 34 truck parking spaces.
- Installation of an LED remaining-space display at the entrance to the rest park.
- Automatic detection of trucks entering and leaving via the sensor system.
- Real-time transmission of occupancy data to a central control system and digital map.
Implementation & rollout.
The technical implementation focuses on lean, robust hardware and software that simply works in practice.
- Design of parking space logic and remaining-space display together with Euro Rastpark.
- Fast installation of the sensors during ongoing operation of the rest park.
- Connection of sensor data to the central control system and digital visualization.
- Acceptance in live operation: remaining-space display and real-time map are actively used.
// Results & transformation
More planning reliability for drivers, more control for operators.
Real-time occupancy of the truck rest park significantly reduces the search for parking and at the same time increases service quality and planning reliability for drivers and operators.
Less time spent searching for parking
Truck drivers can see early on whether spaces are available at the rest park, saving time and fuel and no longer needing to drive to several locations “on spec”.
Targeted management of areas
Rest park operators receive a real-time overview of parking occupancy and can better plan services, capacities and any expansions, aligning them with demand.
Simple, robust system
Manageable hardware, stable software and high functionality ensure that the system works reliably in day-to-day operations and is quickly accepted.
// Statement from practice
Practical view from Euro Rastpark.
Euro Rastpark particularly emphasizes the combination of lean hardware and reliable software.
“The system has manageable hardware, the software works wonderfully and the functionality is simply amazing.”
