// Overview

Initial situation & goals.

raumobil GmbH uses smapkit to develop modular digital mobility platforms for cities, regions, and companies. In the smap mobility map, parking garages, sharing services, bus stops, disabled parking spaces, and EV charging stations are among the elements displayed.

Until now, the parking data shown were largely static: locations were known, but the actual occupancy of spaces was not. The goal was to extend the platform with real-time occupancy data in order to significantly increase data quality and the tangible benefit for end users, while at the same time ensuring clean technical integration into existing smap projects.

Project challenges.

  1. Parking information in smap was primarily static – with no statement about the current on-site occupancy.
  2. Real-time data needed to be integrated seamlessly into the existing smap ecosystem.
  3. The integration had to be efficient and clearly documented for raumobil’s development team.
  4. The solution had to be easily scalable to further cities and types of areas.

// Solution & implementation

Solution: real-time data from in-ground sensors.

Smart City System’s single-space sensors are installed on the individual parking spaces and reliably record every parking event – the basis for a live occupancy display in smap.

  1. Installation of NB-IoT in-ground sensors on selected spaces (e.g. sharing or special spaces).
  2. Every parking event (vacant / occupied) is automatically detected in real time.
  3. Transmission of sensor data to the Smart City System platform.
  4. Provision of real-time occupancy data for raumobil via a clearly documented API.

Implementation & integration.

The integration process was deliberately kept lean – focusing on rapid integration into smap and high reusability for further projects.

  1. Joint definition of relevant space types and display logic in smap.
  2. Technical connection of the Smart City System API to the smap backend services.
  3. Mapping of sensor and occupancy data to the platform’s map view.
  4. Pilot operation, fine-tuning, and rollout – integration was completed within a few days.

// Results & transformation

Real-time data as added value for mobility platforms.

By integrating real-time parking data, smap becomes significantly more relevant – for users, cities, and other mobility partners who rely on a dependable data foundation.

Higher data quality

Instead of only showing where parking options exist, the platform now shows whether spaces are currently free or occupied – reflecting reality much more accurately.

Better user experience

Users can plan their routes more precisely, choose alternative routes, and reduce search traffic – a noticeable advantage, especially for high-demand spaces.

Strong foundation for additional services

The standardized interface and real-time data create a basis for additional features such as dynamic notifications, forecasting, or linking with further mobility services.

// Statement from practice

Practical perspective from raumobil.

For raumobil, it was particularly important that the solution could be integrated into the existing platform quickly and cleanly.

The Smart City System interface was clearly documented, which made the integration process very lean. Within a short time, real-time parking data could be fully integrated into smap – without complex additional projects.
