// Overview
Initial situation & objectives.
Stadtverkehr Detmold GmbH (SVD) is the local public transport company of the City of Detmold and is responsible, among other things, for parking management. A particular focus is on disabled and motorhome parking spaces.
Before starting a journey, it was previously not clear whether a special parking space was actually free. This is especially critical for people with disabilities or motorhome travellers when planning their route. The goal of the project was to make the availability of these spaces transparent, easily accessible and usable in digital form – without complex processes for employees and without media breaks for citizens and commuters.
Project challenges.
- Before arriving at the car park, it is unclear whether a disabled or motorhome space is available.
- Special parking spaces are often limited – wrong turns are particularly critical for those affected.
- Parking information should be provided in an easily accessible, user-friendly format.
- The solution had to be easy for Stadtverkehr Detmold to operate and integrable into existing channels.
// Solution & implementation
Digital special parking spaces with IoT sensors.
Smart City System’s parking sensors record the occupancy status of each special parking space in real time and make the data centrally usable.
- Installation of in-ground sensors at disabled and motorhome parking spaces in the Detmold urban area.
- Transmission of real-time occupancy status to the Smart City System platform.
- Integration of real-time data into the City Pilot app for mobile use.
- Embedding of the occupancy display on the Stadtverkehr Detmold website for a quick overview.
Implementation & rollout.
Implementation was carried out in close cooperation between Stadtverkehr Detmold and Smart City System – from the concept of the relevant special parking spaces through to commissioning of the digital display.
- Identification and prioritisation of suitable locations for disabled and motorhome parking spaces.
- Planning of sensor positions and technical alignment with SVD’s IT and web landscape.
- Installation and commissioning of NB-IoT sensors during ongoing operations.
- Configuration of the real-time occupancy display in the City Pilot app and on the website.
// Results & transformation
Data-driven transparency for special parking spaces.
Citizens and commuters can check whether a space is available before they arrive – saving time, reducing search traffic and significantly improving the usability of special parking spaces.
Fast availability display
In the City Pilot app, users can see in advance whether a disabled or motorhome space is free – and navigate directly there instead of driving there on spec.
Less search traffic
Fully occupied car parks are identified early on, avoiding unnecessary trips. This reduces time-consuming and environmentally harmful search traffic and relieves pressure on the city area.
More inclusion & planning reliability
People with disabilities can better assess how close they can park to their destination. The digital transparency supports more inclusive and user-friendly mobility planning.
// Statement from practice
Practical perspective from Detmold.
Stadtverkehr Detmold highlights the close cooperation and smooth implementation with Smart City System.
“I think every stage of the collaboration with Smart City System has been positive. At this point, I’d also like to praise the staff – each of them did an excellent job from A–Z. We are satisfied. There is nothing specific to single out. Everyone did a great job in their area.”
