About

The Verkehrsverbund Oberelbe and the 12 partner transport companies provide modern public transport for residents and visitors of Dresden and the surrounding region. The service area, covering approximately 4,800 km², includes the state capital Dresden, the districts of Meißen, Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge, and the western part of the Bautzen district.
Challenge
The Park & Ride parking spaces are used daily by drivers who leave their vehicles at the station and continue their journey with public transport. The transport association lacked an overview of the current occupancy. This is useful for displaying available parking spaces to users and, on the other hand, for planning future parking facilities using historical data. Extensive construction work on the parking spaces should be avoided during the digitalization process.
Solution

The solution from Smart City System helps to digitize the parking spaces at the Park & Ride facilities overnight using easy-to-install ground sensors. The real-time data is displayed on various software applications of the VVO. Commuters can effectively be directed to available parking spaces, as they can check the current occupancy before departure.
By integrating occupancy data into our electronic information systems, P+R customers have access to valuable real-time information, allowing them to find and head directly to Park & Ride locations with available spaces—without unnecessary detours. Trips to full P+R lots and missed train departures are now a thing of the past.
