// Overview

Initial situation & objectives.

The Verkehrsverbund Oberelbe (VVO) is responsible, together with twelve transport companies, for local public transport in Dresden and the surrounding region with several districts.

Park & Ride facilities are used every day as transfer points from car to bus and train. For a good user experience and for planning new parking spaces, VVO needed reliable transparency on the actual occupancy of P+R car parks – without extensive construction work at the sites.

Project challenges.

  1. No real-time overview of the occupancy of Park & Ride car parks
  2. Free spaces could only be communicated and displayed to a limited extent
  3. Lack of historical occupancy data for planning future P+R capacities
  4. Digitalization was to be implemented without major civil engineering works and conversions

// Solution & implementation

Digital P+R solution with in-ground sensors.

The Smart City System solution digitalizes parking spaces at P+R facilities overnight and delivers reliable occupancy data – without additional power supply on site.

  1. Installation of NB-IoT in-ground sensors on selected P+R parking spaces
  2. Bonded sensors instead of conventional civil engineering works in the road area
  3. Self-sufficient wireless sensor technology that does not require local power connections
  4. Transmission of occupancy data in real time to VVO systems

Implementation & rollout.

The rollout was carried out in close coordination with VVO – from the site concept through to integration into the electronic passenger information systems.

  1. Analysis of existing Park & Ride facilities and relevant parking spaces
  2. Definition of sensor positions based on passenger flows and commuter traffic
  3. Fast installation and commissioning of sensors during ongoing operations
  4. Integration of real-time data into VVO information systems and digital maps

The combination of sensor data and current public transport information provides the basis for multimodal travel chains, improves the utilization of P+R facilities and strengthens public transport.

Real-time occupancy at a glance

VVO can see the occupancy of more than 2,000 parking spaces at digitalized P+R facilities at a glance and can identify peak loads at an early stage.

More efficient use of spaces

Commuters are guided specifically to free spaces, reducing search traffic and avoiding unnecessary trips to already full Park & Ride facilities.

Strengthening public transport

Better planning of the transfer makes P+R services more attractive, simplifies the switch to bus and train and supports growing passenger numbers.

VVO uses the occupancy data as an important building block of its digital passenger information and for the strategic development of P+R infrastructure.
